Le 12 août 1819, le navire Essex part pour une chasse à la baleine dans le Pacifique. Au large des Galapagos, il est attaqué par un cachalot géant et sombre. Les naufragés dérivent pendant 18 semaines et finissent par se livrer à des actes de cannibalisme. Récit ayant inspiré le roman de Herman Melville, «Moby Dick».
